Video: Waterfowl Hunting on Utah’s Great Salt Lake

A story of mentorship is the focus of a new video from Ducks Unlimited.

From Duck’s Unlimited:

“Women in the outdoors don’t always start as hunters. On her first duck hunt at the Great Salt Lake, one biologist discovers what mentorship, patience, and conservation really mean.

November on Utah’s Great Salt Lake is raw, cold, and alive with migrating birds. For Coryna Hebert, a Ducks Unlimited biologist, it was also the setting for her first-ever duck hunt, guided by mentors like Shaundi Campbell, Senior Marketing Manager at Browning, who understood that learning comes before success.

In this episode of Ascend, Coryna joins experienced hunters and conservationists who help her navigate one of the most challenging waterfowl environments in the country. From changing weather and equipment challenges to learning proper shooting form and situational awareness, every moment is rooted in patience and trust.

But this story isn’t about numbers. It’s about understanding the connection between hunting and conservation, and what it means to engage with the land in a deeper way. Seeing thousands of green-winged teal rafted across the lake, feeling the weight of harvesting an animal responsibly, and realizing why wetlands matter for future generations, all of it reshapes how Coryna views her work and the outdoors.

This is what mentorship in the outdoors looks like: meeting someone where they are, sharing knowledge without pressure, and letting confidence grow at its own pace.

You’ll take away:
